CERTIFICATION
The American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN) offers two credentials to OHNs who have worked in the specialty for at least 4000 hours and who have earned 50 or more contact hours in topics related to occupational health in the past five years. The Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S) credential requires a bachelor’s degree while the Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) credential does not. Once the requirements for experience and continuing education have been met, qualified candidates sit for a 200-question examination. The questions are all written by practicing OHNs from a variety of work environments. Topics covered on the COHN-S exam are presented from more of a Manager/Coordinator perspective, while the COHN is more related to Direct Care. The test is constructed and administered by a professional testing consultant twice yearly at over 38 sites across the country.
ABOHN is the sole certifying body for Occupational Health Nurses and has certified over 11,000 OHNs since it was founded in 1972. ABOHN is accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties to insure that its certification program meets the highest standards of integrity and trust.
In today’s competitive environment, certification is more important than ever. Employers and consumers alike are placing great emphasis on certifications as a mark of quality and to gain competitive edge. Now is a wonderful time to consider demonstrating the value you bring to your organization by becoming certified!
